Ask vs Make: What kind of Rider Am I?

“In the French philosophy, we don’t ‘make’ the horse do, we ‘ask’ the horse to do,” said the French dressage clinician. These were humbling words when I took an honest look at myself and the relationship I had with my horses. Yet, it transformed how I ride and relate with my horses today.

SMOOTH GAITS

Dressage teaches the rider how to apply the rein, leg, seat, and weight aids effectively, consistently, and at the ideal timing to communicate with the horse. This communication leads the horse into relaxation, balance, tempo, rhythm, connection, symmetry, and connection to develop quality smooth gaits on cue.  Among the natural smooth gaits of the Tennessee Walking Horse are the flat walk, running walk, fox trot, saddle rack, and canter.
